Managing Baby Eczema: Why Organic Muslin Supports a Healthy Skin Barrier

Published on 12 March 2026 at 14:00

Hi, I’m Katie.

I am the founder of The Little Soft Cloth, but before that—and still to this day—I am a certified skin specialist of 23 years. My career has been spent under the magnifying lamp, studying the skin barrier and helping clients navigate complex skin conditions.

When I became a mother, my professional world and my personal world collided. I looked at the delicate,  skin of my son and realised that the "standard" products on the market often weren't good enough for a developing skin barrier—especially one prone to eczema.

Understanding the Eczema Barrier

To understand why the right cloth matters, we first have to understand what eczema actually is. Think of healthy skin like a well-built brick wall: the skin cells are the bricks, and lipids (oils) are the mortar holding them together. This wall keeps moisture in and irritants out.

In a baby with eczema, that "mortar" is often missing or leaky. Gaps appear in the wall, allowing moisture to evaporate (causing dryness) and environmental triggers—like dust, harsh chemicals, or rough fibers—to get in and cause inflammation.

Why Organic Muslin is the Best Choice for Eczema

When a baby is mid-flare-up, their skin is in a state of "high alert." Here is why our GOTS Certified Organic Muslin is the professional choice for managing this delicate condition:

1. Zero Toxic Residue (The GOTS Difference)

Standard cotton is one of the most chemically-treated crops in the world. Even after washing, trace amounts of pesticides, synthetic dyes, and formaldehyde can remain in the fibers. For an infant with a "leaky" skin barrier, these chemicals  can be absorbed directly into the skin, triggering a cycle of itching and redness. Being GOTS Certified means our cloths are guaranteed free from these hidden irritants.

2. The Open-Weave "Breathability"

Traditional towels are made of "loops" (terry cloth) that trap heat and moisture against the skin. For an eczema sufferer, heat is the enemy—it increases the "itch factor." Muslin features a flat, open weave that allows the skin to breathe and helps regulate temperature during and after bath time.

3. Gentle Mechanical Cleansing

When eczema patches become crusty or dry, it’s tempting to want to scrub them. However, friction is a major trigger for flare-ups. Our organic muslin is soft enough to lift away debris and leftover creams without causing "micro-trauma" to the skin surface.

4. Bacteria Control

Because muslin is so thin and breathable, it dries incredibly fast. Terry towels often stay damp for hours, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria. For a baby with eczema, whose skin is already prone to secondary infections (like staph), using a fresh, quick-drying muslin cloth is a vital hygiene step. However, I do recommend stocking up and offering a fresh muslin cloth daily.

My Specialist Tip for Eczema Bathing

If your little one is struggling with a flare-up, try the "Soak and Seal" method:

  • Skip the Bubbles: Avoid harsh chemicals, fragrances, and SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) found in many scented bubble baths. These are high-level irritants that can break down the already fragile skin barrier.

  • The Power of Oats: Adding natural colloidal oats to the bathwater is a fantastic way to soothe redness. It creates a protective, antioxidant-rich film on the skin that helps calm the "itch" naturally.

  • Keep it Lukewarm: Hot water is a major trigger. Ensure the bath is comfortable but not steamy to avoid drying out the skin.

  • Pat, Don’t Rub: Use your Little Soft Cloth to gently pat the skin dry. Rubbing with a rough towel creates friction that can heat up the skin and trigger a fresh itch-scratch cycle.

  • The 3-Minute Rule: While the skin is still slightly damp from the bath, apply a fragrance-free emollient. This "traps" the hydration in before it evaporates.
